The 133rd China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) Phase 2 commenced with the same lively atmosphere as Phase 1. As of 6:00 pm on April 26, 2023, over 200,000 visitors had attended the fair, while the online platform had uploaded approximately 1.35 million exhibition products. Judging from the scale of the exhibition, the quality of products on display, and the impact on trade, Phase 2 remained full of vivacity and presented six noteworthy highlights.
Highlight One: Increased Scale. The offline exhibition area reached a record high, covering 505,000 square meters, with more than 24,000 booths – a 20% increase if compared to pre-pandemic levels. The Canton Fair’s second phase featured three main display sections: daily consumer goods, home decor, and gifts. The size of zones such as kitchenware, household items, personal care products, and toys was significantly expanded to satisfy market demands. The fair welcomed over 3,800 new companies, showcasing numerous new products with more variety, serving as a one-stop purchase platform.
Highlight Two: Higher Quality Participation. As per tradition on the Canton Fair, strong, new, and high-end companies participated in Phase 2. Nearly 12,000 enterprises showcased their products, a 3,800 increase compared to before the pandemic. Over 1,600 companies received recognition as established brands or were awarded titles such as state-level enterprise technology centers, AEO certification, small- and medium-sized innovative entities, and national champions.
It has been revealed that a total of 73 first-time product launches will take place, online and offline, during the fair. Such spectacle events will be a battleground where market-leading new materials, technologies, and methodologies compete frantically to become the hottest commodities.
Highlight Three: Enhanced Product Diversity. Roughly 1.35 million products from 38,000 enterprises were exhibited on the online platform, including over 400,000 new products – a 30% share of all items showcased. Nearly 250,000 environmentally friendly products were exhibited. Phase 2 presented a higher total number of new products compared to Phase 1 and 3. Many exhibitors creatively utilized the online platform, covering product photography, video streaming, and live webinars. Well-known international brand names, such as Italian cookware manufacturer Alluflon S.p.A. and German kitchen brand Maitland-Othello GmbH, showcased their latest product submissions, fueling strong demand from consumers worldwide.
Highlight Four: Stronger Trade Promotion. Almost 250 companies from 25 national-level foreign trade transformation and upgrading bases attended. Five national-level import trade promotion innovation demonstration zones in Guangzhou Nansha, Guangzhou Huangpu, Wenzhou Ou Hai, Beihai in Guangxi, and Qisumu in Inner Mongolia participated in the fair for the first time. These demonstrated examples of cooperation between different parts of the economy that will accelerate global trade facilitation.
Highlight Five: Encouraged Importation. Roughly 130 exhibitors from 26 countries and regions participated in the fair’s giftware, kitchenware, and home décor zones. Four countries and regions, namely Turkey, India, Malaysia, and Hong Kong, organized group exhibitions. The Canton Fair resolutely promotes the integration of imports and exports, with tax advantages such as exemption from import tariffs, value-added tax, and consumption taxes on imported products sold during the fair. The fair aims to enhance the importance of the “buying worldwide and selling worldwide” concept, which emphasises connecting both domestic and international markets.
Highlight Six: Newly Established Area for Infant and Toddler Products. With China’s infant and toddler product industry growing rapidly in recent years, the Canton Fair has increased its focus on this industry. Phase 2 welcomed a new section for infant and toddler products, with 501 booths furnished by 382 exhibitors from different domestic and foreign markets. Nearly 1,000 products were exhibited in this category, including tents, electric swings, baby clothes, furniture for infants and toddlers, and maternal- and child-care appliances. The new product displays in this area, such as electric swings, electric rockers, and maternal- and child-care electric appliances, reflect the continuous evolution and integration of innovative technologies in the sector, meeting the needs of a new generation of consumer demands.
The Canton Fair is not only a globally renowned economic and trade show for “Made in China”; it functions as a nexus bridging China’s consumption trends and improved quality of life.
